Frugal Tip: Swap your cell phone plan for a Sugar Mama
![]() |
I’ve been searching for what seems like forever, for a free cell phone plan paid for by advertising (like our friends across the pond have with Blyk). Apparently, we don’t have a service quite as innovative as that. So, until someone with enough foresight can launch a Blyk equivalent in the States,Virgin Mobile’s Sugar Mama plan is as close as we’re going to get to free service. With Sugar Mama, you can get up to 75 free minutes of airtime per month by viewing advertisements and filling out short surveys online, or by receiving free picture or text messages on your phone. Of course you would need a Virgin Mobile Plan, to be able to use this service. Virgin Mobile has several plans to choose from including, monthly, pay-as-you-go, and data. If you only use your cell for emergencies, or to talk for a minute at a time, the best plan to go with is the Pay-as-you-go "by the minute" plan. There are two choices: 20 cents/minute basic plan, or 10 cents/minute plan for $6.99/month. $7 bucks/month may be the way to go to prevent yourself from being gouged. That way you will only get charged 10 cents/minute while racking up your free minutes during the month. All of this without the inconvenience of being tied into a contract. Not bad.
Their phones aren’t bad either. They have their new TNT! listed for $19.99, the Marbl for $12.99, and the Aloha (best deal) for $9.99 (or free with purchase of $10 in airtime!). Their more expensive phones range from $29.99-$99.99. You have the option of purchasing a phone online, or you can snag one from their retail outlets like Target, Best Buy, etc. You could even activate a Virgin Mobile phone from eBay, if you really want to be frugal (just make sure you don’t pay more than you would pay at the Virgin Mobile web store).
For those of you in the UK, check out Blyk’s service here.
